How to Play Gallery Solitaire
Gallery Solitaire Rules
| Players: 1 | Type: Solitaire | Supplies: 1 Deck |
Objective
The objective of Gallery is to rearrange the rows of cards until each row starts with a 2 on the left and continues in ascending order to the king, in suit, at the end of the row on the right.
Setup
Deal all cards into four rows of 13 face-up cards each, then remove all aces from the layout, leaving four gaps. Place the aces aside until the cards are redealt.
Game Play
Any card may be moved into a gap as long as the card is one rank higher and of the same suit as the card to the left of
the gap, or one rank lower and of the same suit as the card on the right of the gap. A 2 may be moved to a gap that is
at the start of a row.
When there are no more available moves the player wants to make, they may redeal. All cards that are not in the proper
sequence to win the game are redealt. Cards are in the proper sequence when a 2 of any suit starts a row, and the
subsequent cards to its right are one rank higher and of the same suit as the card to its left, as follows:
2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-jack-queen-king. For example, if the top row starts with a 2 of hearts, and then, on its right, has a
3 of hearts, then a 4 of hearts, then a 5 of hearts, then a card that is not in the proper ascending order and suit,
like an 8 of clubs, all cards after the 5 of hearts in this row would be part of the cards redealt. Another example
would be if a row doesn't start with a 2, then that entire row would be part of the redeal.
To redeal, gather all cards that are not in the proper sequence in each row, and the four aces. Shuffle these cards
together and deal them to the tableau to fill the thirteen-by-four grid, and remove the aces again to create four new
gaps. Continue play as normal. You may redeal once per game. When there are no more moves after the redeal, the game is
over.
To Win
Gallery is won if all four rows start with a 2 on the left, and each card to its right is one rank higher and of the same suit as the preceding card, until the last card in the row is a king. If there are no more available moves after the redeal, and the rows are not all in the proper sequence, the game is lost.
Variation
Allow more redeals for an easier variation of Gallery.
There is a variation of Gallery called Gaps. Any card may be moved into a gap as long as the card is one rank higher and
of the same suit as the card to the left of the gap. Cards may not be moved to a gap based on the card to the right of
the gap. If a king is on the left of a gap, the gap is rendered useless since the king is the highest rank. Two redeals
are allowed. All other rules remain the same.
