How to Play Crazy Quilt Solitaire
Crazy Quilt Solitaire Rules
| Players: 1 | Type: Solitaire | Supplies: 2 Decks |
Objective
The objective of Crazy Quilt is to build the foundation piles from the aces in ascending order to the kings in suit, and from the kings in descending order to the aces in suit.
Setup
Remove an ace and a king of each suit to form the eight foundation piles. Deal 64 cards in an eight-by-eight grid to form the tableau, with the orientation of the cards alternating from vertical to horizontal. The first row will start with a vertical card and alternate in orientation until the last card, the eighth card in the first row, is horizontal. The second row will start with a horizontal card and end with a vertical card. Each new row alternates between starting with a vertical card or a horizontal card, and so on until the eighth row starts with a horizontal card and ends with a vertical card. Place the remaining deck face down to form the stock.
Game Play
The ace foundation piles are built in ascending order to the king, in suit. To add a card to an ace foundation pile, it
must be one rank higher and of the same suit as the top card of the foundation pile it is being placed on. The king
foundation piles are built in descending order to the aces, in suit. To add a card to a king foundation pile, it must be
one rank lower and of the same suit as the top card of the foundation pile it is being placed on. You may move cards
from one foundation pile to the other of the same suit as long as the previous rules are followed. For example, if the
ace of clubs foundation pile is built up to the 7 of clubs, and the king of clubs foundation pile is built down to the 8
of clubs, you could transfer the 7 of clubs onto the 8 of clubs or the 8 of clubs onto the 7 of clubs. Kings and aces
may not be removed from foundation piles.
The top card of the waste pile and any card in the tableau that has at least one of its shorter edges free from being
blocked by another card is available for play onto a foundation pile. The shorter edge of a card would be the top or
bottom of the card if you were looking at it vertically. For example, you could move the first card from the second row
from the top, the 2 of diamonds, onto the ace of diamonds since the 2 of diamonds has a shorter edge free. Following
this, since the 2 of diamonds has been moved from the tableau, the 3 of diamonds now has at least one shorter edge free,
making it available for play. When a card is removed from the tableau, the empty space it leaves behind is not filled.
Cards in the tableau are also available for play onto the waste pile; they must still have a shorter edge free. To add a
card from the tableau to the waste pile, it must be of the same suit and either one rank higher or one rank lower than
the top card of the waste pile. For example, if the top card of the waste pile was a 7 of clubs, then an available 8 of
clubs or 6 of clubs from the tableau could be placed on top of the waste pile. You may play an ace on a king or a king
on an ace. When there are no more moves the player wants to make, flip the top card of the stock over to form or add to
the waste pile.
When the stock is depleted and there are no more available moves, you may redeal. To redeal, flip the waste pile over to
reform the stock. You may only redeal once per game. When the stock is depleted a second time and there are no more
moves, the game is over.
To Win
Crazy Quilt is won if all cards are built onto the eight foundation piles. If you are out of moves after the stock is depleted a second time and there are still cards in the tableau or waste pile, the game is lost.
