How to Play Baroness Solitaire

Baroness solitaire is a simple addition patience game that uses one deck of playing cards.

Baroness Solitaire Rules

Objective

The objective of baroness solitaire is to remove all cards from the tableau by matching two cards with a value of 13.

Setup

Shuffle the deck. Deal out a row of five face up cards. Place the remaining deck face down next to the row to form the stock.

King: 13
Queen: 12
Jack: 11
2-10: Face Value
Ace: 1

Game Play

Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play. The player uses any two available cards to make a pair that's value equals 13. When a pair with a value of 13 is made, the paired cards are discarded. Kings are automatically discarded by themselves since they have a value of 13.

When no more pairs can be made, an additional five cards are dealt, one onto each pile in the tableau either filling a space or covering the existing card in the pile. The new top cards are available for play. When the top card of a pile is used in a pair and discarded, the card beneath it becomes the new top card of that pile and is immediately available for play.

When there are only two cards left in the stock, they are used as grace cards, and are added to the end of the tableau row, as new tableau piles, face up, side by side, and are available for play.

To Win

If the player is able to discard all cards by pairing them together, they win baroness solitaire. If a player deals the entire deck, and can not pair anymore cards while still having cards in the tableau, they lose baroness solitaire.

Variants

-Some versions of this game have the row dealt as seven cards instead of five. In this instance, there will be three grace cards at the end instead of two. Rows are dealt as seven tableau piles instead of five. All other rules remain the same.
